How to use the decimal to percent calculator

  1. Type the decimal into the box. A leading zero is optional: .075 and 0.075 are read the same way.

The formula: multiply by 100

percent = decimal × 100
Or shift the decimal point two places to the right, then write %.

A percentage is a count of hundredths. Asking “what percent is 0.62?” is asking how many hundredths 0.62 contains, and the answer is 62 of them, so 0.62 = 62%. Multiplying by 100 is how you count them.

By hand, move the point two places right and add the % sign. The zeros you pass through matter:

0.62 → 6.2 → 62 so 62% 0.008 → 0.08 → 0.8 so 0.8% 1.25 → 12.5 → 125 so 125%

The % sign is doing real work here, and it is not decoration. Dropping it changes 62% into the number 62, which is a hundred times larger. The two forms carry the same information but they are not interchangeable inside a formula.

Per mille counts thousandths instead of hundredths, so it needs three places rather than two: 0.008 is 0.8% and also 8‰. Small rates are often quoted this way precisely because the percent version starts with a zero and a point.

Worked examples

Example: a conversion rate

A page gets 1,250 visits and 47 sign-ups. Divide first, then convert.

47 ÷ 1,250 = 0.0376 0.0376 × 100 = 3.76%

3.76%, not 37.6%. Rates in the low thousandths are where an extra place is easiest to gain by accident.

Example: the fraction 7/8

Fractions go through the decimal on the way to a percentage.

7 ÷ 8 = 0.875 0.875 × 100 = 87.5%

Eighths are worth knowing by sight: 1/8 is 12.5%, so 7/8 is 87.5% and 3/8 is 37.5%.

Example: revenue that grew

Revenue went from $80,000 to $200,000. The ratio is above 1.

200,000 ÷ 80,000 = 2.5 2.5 × 100 = 250%

This year is 250% of last year. The increase is the part above the whole: 1.5, which is 150%.

Turning probabilities, rates and fractions into percentages

Most decimals worth converting did not start life as decimals. They came out of a division, a model or a measurement, and the percentage is just the readable form.

Probabilities

A probability is already a decimal between 0 and 1, so the conversion is direct: 0.62 is a 62% chance, 0.05 is a 5% chance, 0.9995 is a 99.95% chance. Because a probability can never exceed 1, this is the one case where a result above 100% always means something has gone wrong upstream.

Rates

Rates arrive as a division you have already done. Keep the numerator and denominator straight, because reversing them produces a number that still converts cleanly and is completely wrong:

47 sign-ups ÷ 1,250 visits = 0.0376 → 3.76% 1,250 ÷ 47 = 26.6 → 2,660% (the ratio, not the rate)

Fractions

Divide the top by the bottom, then multiply by 100. There is no shortcut around the division for anything but the familiar fractions.

A ratio written with a colon needs one more decision before any of this applies: whether “3 : 4” means 3 out of 4 or a 3-to-4 split of a total. Those give 75% and 42.86%. The ratio to percentage calculator handles both readings.

Decimals above 1 give percentages above 100%

There is no ceiling on the conversion. Once the decimal passes 1, the percentage passes 100, and the arithmetic does not change at all.

The care needed is in the wording, not the math. A multiplier and an increase are different quantities:

The growth column is the multiplier minus 1, converted. That single subtraction is behind most disagreements about a growth figure: “sales tripled” is a multiplier of 3, which is 300% of last year but a 200% increase.

Watch outGrowth factors below 1 do not reverse symmetrically. A 20% drop leaves a multiplier of 0.8, and getting back to where you started needs a 25% rise, because 1 ÷ 0.8 = 1.25.

Read the first two rows carefully, because they are the pair that gets swapped. 0.001 is a tenth of one percent, and 0.01 is a full one percent. Ten times apart, one decimal place apart, and easy to mistype.

The bottom half of the table is a useful mental anchor for anything above the whole: 1.25 is a quarter more than the original, and 2 is double it. If you need to travel in the other direction and turn one of these percentages back into a decimal, the percent to decimal calculator divides by 100 instead.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the point one place. 0.45 is 45%, not 4.5%. Two places, every time.
  • Losing a place on small rates. 0.0376 is 3.76%, not 37.6%. Count the zeros after the point before you move anything.
  • Reporting a fraction as a percent without dividing. 7/8 is not 78%. Divide first to get 0.875, then multiply.
  • Dropping the % sign. 0.62 becomes 62%, which is not the number 62. The sign is part of the value.
  • Confusing “percent of” with “percent increase”. A decimal of 2.5 is 250% of the original but only a 150% increase.
  • Assuming a probability can exceed 100%. If a converted probability comes out above 100%, the input was not a probability.
  • Rounding before converting. Rounding 0.8333 to 0.83 turns 83.33% into 83%. Convert first, then round with the rounding calculator.
  • Reading a spreadsheet cell twice. A cell formatted as a percentage already displays the converted value. Multiplying it by 100 again gives a figure a hundred times too large.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a decimal to a percent?

Multiply by 100 and add the % sign, or move the decimal point two places to the right. So 0.35 becomes 35% and 1.4 becomes 140%. A percentage counts hundredths, so multiplying by 100 is simply counting how many hundredths the decimal contains.

What is 0.425 as a percent?

42.5%. Multiply by 100, or shift the point two places right: 0.425 → 4.25 → 42.5. As a fraction it is 17/40, and in per mille it is 425‰. You can check by going back the other way: 42.5 ÷ 100 = 0.425.

What is 0.008 as a percent?

0.8%, which is less than one percent. Moving the point two places right on 0.008 gives 0.8, and the % sign stays. The easy error is reading it as 8%, which is ten times too big. This is one case where the per mille form is clearer: 0.008 is 8‰.

What is 2.5 as a percentage?

250%. Decimals above 1 give percentages above 100%, and the calculation is unchanged: 2.5 × 100 = 250. If 2.5 is a growth multiplier, be precise about the wording — the new figure is 250% of the old one, which is a 150% increase, not a 250% increase.

What is 7/8 as a percent?

87.5%. Divide the top by the bottom first: 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875, then multiply by 100. Eighths come up often enough to memorize: 1/8 is 12.5%, 3/8 is 37.5%, 5/8 is 62.5% and 7/8 is 87.5%. Each step of an eighth is 12.5 percentage points.

How do you turn a probability into a percentage?

Why is 0.1 equal to 10% and not 1%?

Because 0.1 is one tenth, and a tenth is ten hundredths. Percent counts hundredths, so ten of them is 10%. The value that equals 1% is 0.01. Writing 0.1 as 0.10 makes it obvious: two decimal places, and the digits before the % sign are 10.
