Mixed Number Calculator

This mixed number calculator converts a mixed number to an improper fraction, turns an improper fraction back into a mixed number, and adds, subtracts, multiplies or divides two of them. Every answer comes back simplified, as a fraction, a decimal and a percentage.

How to use the mixed number calculator

A mixed number and a mixed fraction are two names for exactly the same thing: a whole number sitting beside a proper fraction, like 3 1/2. Teachers, textbooks and exam boards use both terms, so if you arrived searching for one and expected the other, nothing is different. Both words appear on this page.

  1. Choose what you want: mixed to improper, improper to mixed, or arithmetic on two values.
  2. Type the first value. Write a mixed number as whole number, space, fraction: 3 1/2. A plain fraction such as 7/2 and a decimal such as 1.75 are both accepted too.
  3. In arithmetic mode, type the second value and pick +, −, × or ÷.
  4. Read the result as it updates while you type. Nothing is left half-finished: the answer is reduced to lowest terms and shown as an improper fraction, a mixed number, a decimal and a percentage.

The working is printed underneath the answer, line by line, so you can copy the method rather than just the number. That matters if the answer has to be shown on paper.

Converting a mixed number to an improper fraction

One rule does all the work, and it is worth understanding rather than memorizing.

new numerator = (whole × denominator) + numerator
The denominator stays exactly as it was.

Why multiply the whole number by the denominator? Because the denominator tells you how many pieces each whole is cut into. In 3 1/2, each whole is cut into 2 halves, so 3 wholes are 6 halves. Add the 1 half you already had and you have 7 halves: 7/2. The multiplication is not a trick, it is a unit conversion — wholes into halves, wholes into eighths, wholes into whatever the bottom number says.

Example: 5 3/8 as an improper fraction

Each whole is 8 eighths, so 5 wholes are 40 eighths. Add the 3 eighths already written.

5 × 8 = 40 40 + 3 = 43 5 3/8 = 43/8 = 5.375 = 537.5%

The result is called improper only because the numerator is larger than the denominator. It is not incorrect, and for most calculation work it is the more useful form. The improper fraction calculator covers that side of the conversion in more detail.

Converting back: divide and read the remainder

Going the other way is a division problem. Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number, the remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator is unchanged.

numerator ÷ denominator = whole, remainder r → whole r/denominator
A remainder of 0 means the fraction was a whole number all along.

Example: 43/8 back to a mixed number

How many complete 8s fit into 43, and what is left over?

43 ÷ 8 = 5 remainder 3 whole = 5, numerator = 3, denominator = 8 43/8 = 5 3/8

Example: 26/8, which still needs simplifying

Convert first, then reduce the fraction part — or reduce first, either order gives the same answer.

26 ÷ 8 = 3 remainder 2 26/8 = 3 2/8 2 and 8 share a factor of 2 3 2/8 = 3 1/4 = 3.25

If the remainder is 0, there is no fraction left: 48/6 is 8, not 8 0/6. If you want to see the long division itself set out, the division calculator shows each step.

Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed fractions

Here is the single most important habit with mixed numbers: convert to improper fractions before you multiply or divide. A mixed number is secretly an addition — 2 1/3 means 2 + 1/3 — and you cannot multiply an addition piece by piece.

Watch outMultiplying the whole numbers and then the fractions gives the wrong answer. 2 1/3 × 1 1/2 is not 2 1/6.

Example: 2 1/3 × 1 1/2

Convert both, multiply straight across, then simplify and convert back.

2 1/3 = 7/3 1 1/2 = 3/2 7/3 × 3/2 = 21/6 21/6 = 7/2 = 3 1/2 = 3.5

The shortcut answer of 2 1/6 is out by more than a whole unit. Check it against decimals: 2.333 × 1.5 = 3.5.

Example: 4 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4

Division means multiplying by the reciprocal, and you can only flip a single fraction, not a mixed number.

4 1/2 = 9/2 1 1/4 = 5/4 9/2 ÷ 5/4 = 9/2 × 4/5 = 36/10 36/10 = 18/5 = 3 3/5 = 3.6

Addition and subtraction are different: you can keep the whole numbers separate and work on the fractions, as long as you find a common denominator first and handle borrowing when the top fraction is smaller than the bottom one. Converting to improper fractions still works and avoids the borrowing entirely. 3 1/2 + 2 2/3 becomes 7/2 + 8/3 = 21/6 + 16/6 = 37/6, which is 6 1/6. The subtracting fractions calculator lays out the common denominator step by step.

Common mixed numbers, improper fractions and decimals

These come up constantly in recipes, measurements and homework. Percentages are rounded to two decimal places where they repeat.

Mixed numberImproper fractionDecimalPercentage
1 1/45/41.25125%
1 1/34/31.3333…133.33%
1 1/23/21.5150%
1 3/47/41.75175%
2 1/25/22.5250%
2 2/38/32.6667…266.67%
3 1/825/83.125312.5%
3 1/27/23.5350%
4 3/523/54.6460%
5 5/845/85.625562.5%
10 1/441/410.251,025%

Reading the table backwards is a fast way to convert a decimal. If you see 5.625 and recognize .625 as 5/8, the mixed number is 5 5/8 straight away.

Common mistakes with mixed numbers

  • Multiplying the parts separately. 2 1/3 × 1 1/2 is 3 1/2, not 2 1/6. Convert first, every time.
  • Adding the whole number to the numerator without multiplying. 3 1/2 is 7/2, not 4/2.
  • Changing the denominator during conversion. The bottom number is the size of the pieces. Converting does not resize them.
  • Writing a remainder of zero as a fraction. 48/6 is 8. There is no leftover piece to write.
  • Losing the minus sign. -2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3) = −7/3. The sign covers the whole thing, not just the whole number.
  • Stopping before simplifying. 3 2/8 is a correct value but an unfinished answer. Reduce it to 3 1/4.
  • Flipping a mixed number for division. The reciprocal of 1 1/4 is 4/5, not 1 4/1. Convert to 5/4 before you flip.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mixed number the same as a mixed fraction?

Yes. Mixed number and mixed fraction describe the same object: a whole number written next to a proper fraction, such as 2 3/4. Some curricula prefer one term, some the other, and both mean 2 wholes plus three quarters. Nothing about the math changes with the name.

What is 3 1/2 as an improper fraction?

7/2. Multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator: 3 × 2 = 6, and 6 + 1 = 7. The denominator stays 2. In plain language, three wholes are six halves, plus the one half you already had makes seven halves. As a decimal that is 3.5, or 350%.

What is 17/4 as a mixed number?

4 1/4. Divide 17 by 4: it goes in 4 times with 1 left over, so the whole number is 4, the remainder 1 becomes the numerator, and the denominator stays 4. Check it by converting back: 4 × 4 + 1 = 17. As a decimal, 4.25.

Why do you convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before multiplying?

Because a mixed number is a hidden addition. 2 1/3 means 2 + 1/3, and multiplying two sums requires every part to meet every other part. Converting to 7/3 turns it into a single fraction, so you can multiply numerators and denominators straight across and get the right answer in one step.

Can a mixed number be negative?

Yes, and the minus sign applies to the whole quantity. -2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3), which is −7/3 or about −2.333. It does not mean −2 + 1/3. When you convert, do the arithmetic on the positive value and attach the sign at the end.

What is 2 3/4 + 1 5/6?

4 7/12. Convert both to improper fractions: 11/4 and 11/6. The lowest common denominator is 12, giving 33/12 + 22/12 = 55/12. Divide 55 by 12 to get 4 remainder 7, so the answer is 4 7/12, or about 4.583.

How do you write 1.75 as a mixed number?

The whole part is 1 and the decimal part .75 is 75/100, which reduces to 3/4. So 1.75 is 1 3/4, or 7/4 as an improper fraction. Typing 1.75 into the calculator produces the same conversion, along with the percentage form of 175%.

Do I always have to simplify the answer?

In almost every classroom and exam, yes — an answer of 3 2/8 is usually marked as incomplete even though the value is right. Simplify by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor. Here both divide by 2, giving 3 1/4.

What is 4 1/2 divided by 1 1/4?

3 3/5, or 3.6. Convert to 9/2 and 5/4, then multiply by the reciprocal of the second: 9/2 × 4/5 = 36/10. That reduces to 18/5, which is 3 remainder 3 over 5. Never flip a mixed number directly; convert it to an improper fraction first.
